Moodle, Canvas and Google Classroom deadlines in one calendar

Each learning system keeps its own list of due dates. Here is how to pull assignments from Moodle, Canvas and Google Classroom into the one calendar you already check.

If your courses use Moodle, Canvas or Google Classroom, every assignment already has a due date stored somewhere. The trouble is that it’s stored in three different places, none of which you open every day. All three can send their dates to a normal calendar, so your deadlines show up next to your classes and plans.

Moodle

  1. Sign in to Moodle and open Calendar (from the side menu or your profile menu).
  2. Choose Import or export calendars, then Export calendar.
  3. Pick All courses and a time period such as Recent and next 60 days, then press Get calendar URL.
  4. Copy the link. It’s private: anyone with it can see your course events, so don’t post it in a group.

The exact menu names change a little between colleges, because each one sets up Moodle its own way. If you can’t find export, ask your course coordinator whether it’s turned on.

Canvas

Open Calendar in Canvas and look for Calendar Feed at the bottom of the right-hand column. Copy the link it shows. It includes assignments and events from all your courses.

Google Classroom

Classroom does the work for you: each class gets its own Google Calendar, and assignments with a due date appear there automatically. Open Google Calendar with your college account and look under My calendars for your class names. If you use a different personal account for your calendar, you can share those class calendars to it.

Add the links to your calendar

In Google Calendar on a computer, click the + next to Other calendars, choose From URL, paste the Moodle or Canvas link and add it. On iPhone, go to Settings → Calendar → Accounts → Add Account → Other → Add Subscribed Calendar. Subscribed calendars update by themselves, though Google can take several hours to pick up a brand-new assignment.

Make the alerts work for you

A due date at 11:59 pm is no use if the only alert comes at 11:49 pm. Set a default alert of one day before for these calendars, and for big projects add your own “start by” event a few days earlier. Many students find a short daily look at the week ahead, each morning, catches more than any alert.

Keep it tidy

At the end of each semester, remove the old course calendars so the new ones aren’t lost in the noise. And if a link stops working, export a fresh one: some colleges reset them when courses change.
